MARK KANOVICH

Mark Kanovich was born in Tbilisi, Georgia, on December 19, 1969, and now lives and works in Tel-Aviv. The world of Kanovich is one in which man is constantly seeking love, beauty, warmth, humor and generosity. His fantastic realism focuses on dimension, movement and form, staging his figures through unique and sharp perspectives and unusual and innovative techniques, which fuse sculpture and painting. While his work is clearly inspired by the works of Chagall, Kanovich’s images are equally romantic but often invoke a poignant sense of longing

Born in Tbilisi, Republic of Georgia, Mark Kanovich was academically trained in fine arts and architecture before moving to Israel in 1991. Today, he works from his studio in a picturesque kibbutz near Tel Aviv—a historic creative hub that has housed renowned Israeli artists such as Agam, Nadjar, Volfson, and his close friend and influence, Itzhak Tarkai. Deeply inspired by the warm, open cultures of both Georgia and Israel, Kanovich's work has gained international recognition. He frequently exhibits across Europe and the United States, illustrating books and participating in diverse art projects, alongside a prominent, ongoing collaboration with Park West Gallery.

"I consider myself a figurative artist, which means my true subject is people—specifically, their feelings and emotions. Through my paintings and sculptures, I try to tell stories about the delicate relationships between men and women, mothers and children, and lifelong friends. You will frequently find my subjects in situations that are grotesque, surreal, exaggeratedly lyrical, absurd, or melancholic. I use these methods deliberately to emphasize the mood and the profound longing within the human experience."

Recurring Themes & Symbols:

  • Children: Innocence, fragility, and purity.

  • Women and Flowers: Romantic and simply beautiful.

"While these symbols guide my hand, all of my paintings are meant to be understood and interpreted freely. I encourage the viewer to look closely, think creatively, and find their own story within the canvas."

Lev Yakovlev:

"This is a theater of one director who is pulling the strings... These pictures are beautiful in a way that evokes feelings of delicate tenderness and affection. These paintings grip the viewer. You can contemplate them for a long time and reflect on them."

Omri Hertzog:

"The fantastic realism of his works wishes to exceed the boundaries of the static medium. Kanovich primarily paints motion... The hypnotic, dreamy feel of figures floating in midair is filled with longing for things that could have been, and perhaps never will."

Инна Шейхатович:

Они необыкновенные, люди-человечки, мудрые, простодушные, яркие, как радуга, как летящие сияющие частички фейерверка
